The exciting disaster movie that didn’t happen – and a comment on the failure of assassination markets since 1994

I would like to remind you of Iron Maiden’s lyrics:

Taunting us with visions
Afflicting us with fear
Predicting war for millions
In the hope that one appears

No point askin’, when it is
No point askin’, who’s to go
No point askin’, what’s the game
No point askin’, who’s to blame

This blog should ask :

When will this predicted disaster happen?

Who are the people in society who could reasonably take action regarding this disaster?

What is the “game,” i.e. the underlying cause that sets the rules by which the disaster may be understood?

Who (if anyone) are the people who instigated the disaster?

Unfortunately, many predictions of disaster don’t seem to pan out.

A few days ago, I saw a report that looked like a disaster – some people in the USA thought that their EBT system would break down on a wide scale:

http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/ebt-card-outage-it-is-8-days-into-june-and-many-americans-are-still-waiting-for-food-stamp-money

I did not report –
– I should say, re-post, because I don’t go out and rake the muck like a real reporter — that story when it came out.

I have no idea when the USA’s EBT system will actually fail.

I waited a few days, and it looks like there are no more reports of widespread breakdowns.

This blog should add value to my readers’ experiences of web-surfing. I will not try to add value by immediately reporting every rumor.

I will try to post additional commentary and summaries, because that might be the only value added by this blog.

Here is an example of commentary.

WeSearchr is very exciting. You can find it at:

It is a muck-raking proposal operated like a cypherpunk’s imaginary assassination market.

The problem with reporting about assassination markets is that they don’t seem to exist in reality.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever implemented a successful assassination market. There is no reason to believe that such a business model will inevitably arise, even though computer tech steadily improves.

For more than 20 years, people have been trying to get excited about the assassination market business model. They have been failing for 20 years. Maybe in the future, someone will make that model work. But in the meantime, don’t get excited about things that have failed repeatedly. If anyone ever makes them work, then you will have an excuse to get excited.

I imagine that many of my readers are news junkies who eagerly scan every headline, looking for possible disasters. Disasters are exciting, and imagining disasters is even more exciting than living through a disaster.

Unfortunately, I can’t deceive you and get you excited. If you need some short-term stimulation, video games are readily available. The news of current events is much more boring.

So – regarding assassination markets –

When will this predicted disaster happen?

Any time from 1994 to the indefinite future.

Who are the people in society who could reasonably take action regarding this disaster?

Cops, computer programmers, ordinary citizens.

What is the “game,” i.e. the underlying cause that sets the rules by which the disaster may be understood?

The cause is that communication technology is severely out of balance with commerce and law. If communications ever got the upper hand, then law would suffer and commerce might flourish.

Who (if anyone) are the people who instigated the disaster?

Everyone who ever looked for disreputable information on any computer network.
