Too much Smarminess, Not Enough Spoopiness

“I’m not afraid of werewolves or vampires or haunted hotels, I’m afraid of what real human beings to do other real human beings.”

― Walter Jon Williams

And on that note, a song of revenge:

Okay, enough revenge, make with the spoopy:

It is Halloween evening in my time zone, and probably the morning of Halloween for most of my readers.

So here is a subset of the news that seems relevant:

To draw attention to that WJW quote that opened this post, it is not vampires and werewolves and haunted hotels that should scare you; it is the atrocities that human beings routinely commit against other human beings.

‘I Was Raped By The CIA Medics,’ Says Black-Site Survivor

In his first-ever statement, Majid Khan detailed the vengeful reality of the post-9/11 CIA: “The more I cooperated and told them, the more I was tortured.”

IN ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC accounts in the entire 20-year War on Terror, a survivor of the CIA’s black sites testified at Guantanamo Bay on Thursday that his CIA captors repeatedly sexually assaulted him—sometimes as revenge for his hunger strikes.

“I was raped by the CIA medics,” Majid Khan said in an address before the Guantanamo military commission on Thursday. It was his first statement to the outside world in 18 years of captivity and abuse in Afghanistan and Guantanamo.

Khan, now 41, spent his first 16 years in Pakistan before his family moved to Maryland. He attended Owings Mills High School outside of Baltimore. He acknowledged on Thursday that his trajectory from “normal U.S. teenager” to al-Qaeda adherent to CIA and military prisoner “must be tough to comprehend.” Left unsaid was how often throughout U.S. history Americans, to say nothing of foreigners, have experienced brutality at the hands of a state that sees them as nonpersons.

He recounted asking one of the CIA medics at an Afghanistan black site in September 2003 why the medic administered what Khan called “the insertions.” Khan said the medic responded, “You’re a fucking terrorist.”

Yet the CIA’s treatment of Khan suggests that the agency did not believe Khan mattered in the world of terrorism, or even possessed much intelligence to extract. By late August 2003, he had been tortured so brutally that he signed a confession—“I don’t remember what I wrote, but I did whatever they asked,” he said—an extension of a willingness to cooperate he said he tried to establish on his first day in captivity.

Even though he had given his captors the confession they wanted, Khan said he was mostly left to rot in his cell for the seven months that followed. His interrogators showed no interest in him. Those particular seven months were a hell of a time for people allegedly out to thwart terrorist plots to show such neglect. They bracket a wave of al Qaeda violence from bombing the United Nations out of Baghdad up to the First Battle of Fallujah. “I was so starved for attention,” Khan recalled.

Khan is unique amongst Guantanamo detainees and black-site survivors. He was moved to Guantanamo Bay in 2006; in February 2012, he pleaded guilty to couriering money for al-Qaeda, and agreed to testify in military tribunals against several of the few detainees charged with crimes, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammad. The lieutenant colonels, colonels, commanders, and Navy captains of the commission are expected to sentence him to 25 to 40 years. But his cooperation, in both criminal and military prosecutions, is expected to result in Khan’s release from Guantanamo in February 2022. He has been in one cage or another since March 5, 2003.

“He has lived up to his obligation to provide U.S. authorities with credible and complete information for a decade,” said Katya Jestin, one of Khan’s longtime pro bono attorneys.

Remember how the CIA used to use LSD?

Special inspector general for Afghanistan warns the Pentagon is classifying documents to cover up failures and demands secret reports on how country collapsed are published now

A U.S. government watchdog on Friday accused the State Department and Pentagon of suppressing information that lawmakers and the public need to understand the collapse of Afghanistan’s former government and military and the chaotic U.S. troop pullout.

John Sopko, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction (SIGAR), spoke out on Friday after it emerged that many of the routine documents had now been marked as classified.

‘The full picture of what happened in August – and all the warning signs that could have predicted the outcome – will only be revealed if the information that the departments of Defense and State have already restricted from public release is made available,’ said Sopko.

He published on Friday his latest report into the spending in Afghanistan, as requested by Congress who asked for an explanation of what went wrong.

Sopko said that it was time for transparency since the government of President Ashraf Ghani had collapsed.

‘There is a lot of information that was classified or withheld from the American people over the years, particularly since 2015, to protect the Afghan government from embarrassment,’ Sopko told NPR.

‘And there is no Ghani government. There is no Afghan government anymore. So we think that information should be immediately released to SIGAR and to the American people and Congress in an unclassified format.’

Asked what the information he wanted publishing was, he replied: ‘It was, how good was the Afghan government fighting corruption?

‘How good was the Afghan military able to stand on their own? – casualty rates for the Afghan military, efficiency rates, their ability to actually function as an independent military.

‘That was information that the Ghani government requested the U.S. government not share with the American people. There’s no reason to protect it any more.’

A State Department spokesperson said the department had requested ‘some reports be temporarily removed to redact identifying information from public records and protect the identities of Afghans and Afghan partner organizations’ due to security concerns about the evacuation effort.’

The spokesperson continued: ‘The identifying information are the only details intended to be shielded.’

They added that SIGAR has the authority to restore the reports.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Va. Dems file lawsuit against U.S. Postal Service over delivery delay of absentee ballots

By Kerry Picket – The Washington Times – Monday, October 25, 2021

The Democratic Party of Virginia has filed a lawsuit alleging that local branches of the U.S. Postal Service failed to process and deliver election-related material ahead of the gubernatorial election between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin.

The lawsuit, filed Friday, contends that more than 300,000 Virginians are likely to attempt to cast their ballots by mail this cycle, but USPS did not deliver the requested ballots promptly and therefore is threatening to disenfranchise thousands of Virginia voters.

“Thousands of absentee ballots currently sit at postal facilities throughout the Commonwealth, unprocessed for weeks on end,” the lawsuit states.

Michigan State Police are investigating the disappearance of voting equipment from a rural township after a clerk who promoted conspiracy theories was stripped of her duties.

Adams Township Clerk Stephanie Scott was barred from administering the upcoming Nov. 2 election after she refused to allow legally-required maintenance and accuracy testing on voting machines. Hillsdale County Clerk Marney Kast, who was appointed to run the election, suspects Scott confiscated a tablet containing sensitive election information.

“At this point in time I have no idea where it’s at,” Kast said. “I assume it’s with (Scott).”

Barrett and Kavanaugh Join Supreme Court Liberals To Reject Stay Of Maine Vax Mandate Lacking Religious Exemption

Worried about the shadow docket: “Were the standard otherwise, applicants could use the emergency docket to force the Court to give a merits preview in cases that it would be unlikely to take—and to doso on a short fuse without benefit of full briefing and oral argument.”

On substance, the request for the Supreme Court to stay a Maine regulation mandating coronavirus vaccination for healthcare workers should have been an easy one. The law contains no religious exemption, but does contain a medical exemption which requires virtually no proof of medical condition. Consistent with other Supreme Court decisions which didn’t question government power during a pandemic, but insisted that religion not be disfavored, stay should have issued.

But no. In an Order accompanied by a concurring opinion by Amy Coney Barrett joined by Brett Kavanaugh, the Court 6-3 denied the stay (emphasis added):

The application for injunctive relief presented to JUSTICE BREYER and by him referred to the Court is denied.

[DISTURBING] Jan 6 inmate blows the whistle on DC jail where he and others are being held

Read the letter here:

James Dolan, former Marine and co-creator of the whistleblower submission system SecureDrop alongside Aaron Swartz and Wired editor Kevin Poulsen, has died. The Freedom of the Press Foundation, which took over SecureDrop, reports that Dolan, age 36, took his own life.

Comment: Just because it’s reported as suicide doesn’t mean it really was suicide. Many people benefitted from this death. They should be investigated.

On that topic:

Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson argued the mainstream media’s last gasp for survival was coming in the form of censorship to maintain its “monopoly” and that it was using Big Tech to make it possible.

Carlson explained how media outlets, including CNN, were still obsessed with former President Donald Trump even though he is nine months out of office, and their TV ratings were suffering because of it.

Rather than adapt, Carlson said media companies were determined to eliminate the competitors.

Transcript as follows:

CARLSON: About 20 minutes into the 2016 presidential campaign, it was pretty clear the American media were horribly addicted to Donald Trump. They hated Trump, obviously, but they also needed Trump in order to live, and that’s the face of addiction.

If you’ve ever seen a person grimace while gulping warm vodka before breakfast with shaky hands, you know what it looks like.

So there was really never any question about what was going to happen for sure when news organizations were finally cut off from their vital daily supply of Donald Trump. They were going to collapse in a pile and that’s exactly what they’ve done, they’ve collapsed.

On Tuesday for example, not a single show on CNN, once the most important cable news channel in the world — “This is CNN” — not a single show on the whole channel approached even 800,000 viewers, that’s really low. Chris Cuomo would be better off doing free concerts in the park, which in fact he may soon be doing.

So with Trump gone, the old formula no longer works. That’s easy to understand.

What’s more confusing, harder to understand is how they’ve responded to this fact? So, let’s say you’ve made billions of dollars over the years selling rice crispy treats to a hungry public, dentists may have complained about what you were doing, but for you it was always a great business and you assumed it would go on forever because we always think everything good will go on forever, but it doesn’t.

Over time, consumers started to figure out that a marshmallow coated with breakfast cereal, not a very healthy food option. It tastes great at first, eat enough, and it starts to make you feel sick.

So they began to buy less of what you were selling. Following this?

How would you react to that? Well, if you were smart you’d probably just rebrand, you’d change the color, you’d throw in some vitamin additives, you’d rename the product. You might call it crunchy kale treats or healthy life nutrition bars. You’d have figured out that people don’t want sugary garbage, they want something that’s good for them, so you would sell it to them. That seems like a pretty rational choice.

What you probably wouldn’t do if you were selling rice crispy treats to a rapidly shrinking market is convince yourself that you are not in the snack food business, but instead on some kind of mission from God. You would not claim that eating marshmallows is a vital moral imperative. You would not attack your own consumers for preferring something else.

You would not denounce them as morons or racists for eating less sugar. You wouldn’t try and ban the Atkins Diet to make keto illegal. That’d be insane, you’d go bankrupt if you did that.
